Things are about to spice up in the compact sedan segment this fall when the 2017 Hyundai Elantra Sport arrives, giving the Honda Civic Si and Volkswagen GLI something to compete with.
Unveiling the 2017 Hyundai Elantra Sport at an event in Washington this week, the new model will be the powerful yet with 200 plus horsepower from its 1.6 liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine.
Better still, they tell us it will be available with a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual clutch automatic transmission with paddle shifters.
To make it handle well enough to keep up with its power and its competitors, Hyundai has also added a more sophisticated independent multi-link rear suspension, larger tires and wheels, and an upgrade in suspension tuning.
“Elantra Sport demonstrates our commitment to providing drivers with compelling vehicle choices that align with their interests,” says Mike Evanoff, Hyundai Motor America manager of product planning.
“This is a vehicle that reflects our own passion for cars and driving, expressing it with sharp looks, proven in-car technology, upgraded power, and fun, sporty handling.”
It wouldn’t be a sport sedan without some visuals and Hyundai has gone all-in fast and furious with a more aggressive front fascia with deep jowls as well as one at the rear with larger exhaust outlets.
Inside, the cabin will get unique upholstery for its front sports seats, a flat bottom steering wheel and a number of other accouterments.
Not much more in the way of details is yet given. Hyundai says the new 2017 Elantra Sport arrives late this year and full specs and pricing will come closer to that time.
