Hyundai’s hip, slick and cool Veloster received a healthy dose of fresh for 2016, making its official debut at the Chicago Auto Show with new styling touches, a new special edition, and some significant performance mods.

While horsepower was unchanged for both the base Veloster and Veloster Turbo, they added a few twists to the game that are sure to keep the funky coupe, hatch thing on the lists of sport-import shoppers.

The most interesting revelation is the new Rally Edition of which only 1,200 copies will be built. Built upon the Veloster Turbo R-Spec, it comes in an exclusive matte blue paint job trimmed out with carbon-fiberish looking aero goods.

It gets blacked out 18-in lightweight RAYS wheels and 225-section performance tires which go along with a more aggressive suspension with stiffer springs, anti-roll bars and struts all around.

Inside the Rally Edition are special floor mats and badging and a B&M Performance short-shifter for the six-speed manual transmission which also comes now on the Veloster Turbo R-Spec.

The other major front for 2016 for all Veloster Turbos is an available 7-speed dual-clutch transmission tuned for snappy shifts. It can be controlled manually by the shift lever or steering-wheel mounted paddle shifters.

That new transmission should bring an increase in acceleration even though the 2016 Veloster Turbo carries over its 1.6 liter turbocharged engine from last year, still unchanged with 201 horsepower.

All Veloster Turbos also have Torque Vectoring Control which can use the anti-lock brake system to force power to the outside wheel in hard cornering, increase grip for faster corner exit speed.

While some enhancements have been made in suspension tuning for 2016, the Veloster Turbo has fallen mid-pack in most handling comparisons. This is due to its numb steering and old-school twist-beam rear axle. We’ll have to wait until we drive one to render a verdict.

Exterior styling is updated with a fresh grille design and a revised hood to go along with Las Vegas style LED bling. All new wheels across the range including wider 18-inch units for the Turbo and a new 17-inch design for the standard Veloster.

The interior of the 2016 Veloster Turbo also gets some visual upgrades that start with a black headliner and new highly-bolstered heated leather sport seats. And for this year, the Turbo’s cabin can be hand with orange accents on trims and seats when you get Ultra Black or Vitamin C paint.

There’s a new electroluminescent gauge cluster with a customizable TFT menu screen and the Turbo R-Spec now comes with red seat belts so you know you have high-performance.

And lastly, Hyundai gave the 2016 Veloster an enhanced infotainment system with a touchscreen that now has swipe capabilities. It has HD Radio compatibility and Apple Siri integration. There’s also expanded SiriusXM functions like Travel Link services, and revised navigation features.

The 2016 Hyundai Veloster arrives at U.S. dealerships in May. If you want one of the 1,200 Rally Editions you better get with your dealer now and put your name on one as they aren’t likely to last long.
