A redesigned 2016 Lexus LX 570 luxury SUV made its debut at Pebble Beach this week, the largest of Lexus offerings getting a healthy dose of new style, technical and safety features, and powertrain upgrades.

Showing the big V8 powered body-on-frame SUV isn’t going anywhere for a while it gets a healthy refresh in most if the important areas to bring it in-line with the style of Lexus newest models inside and out.

New crisply minted sheet-metal wraps the LX 570 starting with a bold new front-end that features a large and aggressive spindle grille now with satin chrome trims. Sharp new LED headlight clusters also have LED turn signals and daytime running lights. And, there’s LED fog lights down below.

From the rear-three quarter view, a new look comes to the C-Pillar, rear gate and bumper. LED tail lamps are sharper than before and come along with a new rear fascia. The LX 570 retains its distinctive split gate design however.

The wheels look larger because they are. New wheel designs include a 20-inch split 10-spoke and a new optional 21-inch 10-spoke wheel you see here.

Under the hood is the same 5.7 liter DOHC V8 with 383 horsepower that has powered the LX 570 for some time, but it gets for 2016 a new eight-speed automatic transmission. Pickup up two additional gears should provide for better acceleration and improved fuel economy.

This comes with a new drive mode selector which is found across the Lexus line which offers multiple settings including ECO, Comfort, Sport S and Sport S+ settings. The modes cover steering feel, engine response, and transmission shifting behavior.

The adaptive variable suspension is also now tied into these drive modes instead of being controlled separately. The suspension height can however be adjusted manually with a console switch.

As the LX 570 is closely related to the legendary Toyota Land Cruiser the all-wheel drive and off-road systems here are top-notch and unrivaled in its class. The full-time four-wheel drive system has a Torsen limited-slip locking center differential.

It has a 40:60 torque split in most situations but can be locked for challenging off-road conditions. It also comes with advanced features like Crawl Control and Active Traction Control. There’s also Turn Assist, Hill-start Assist Control and Variable Gear Ratio Steering.

Inside, the LX 570 got the latest design treatment from Lexus studios with an all-new dash, console, seating, and technology suite. The look is a big move up from the more truck-like feel of the current LX 570.

Tech features include a standard panoramic view camera which can be viewed on the new12.3-inch center display screen. Controlled by a console mounted puck like other Lexus models, the new driver interface brings with it a new suite of infotainment functionality.

Here you have a wide array of display, audio, and connectivity capabilities displayed clearly on the new large format screen. The Lexus Enform suite of applications is expanded to include every conceivable connectivity feature including several live services which are now available.

The cabin seats up to eight people in cosseting luxury with new shades of leather, new wood trims, and in the safety of ten-standard airbags. And this takes us to the standard for 2016, Lexus Safety System + which is a package of driver assistance and crash prevention features.

These include Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Alert, Intelligent High Beam and an All-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control. There’s also a Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert and an optional Heads-up Display.

The new 2016 Lexus LX 570 arrives late this year with pricing and final fuel-economy specifications to be announced closer to that time. Regardless of price and thirst, there are very few competitors for this luxury SUV.
