While not as comprehensive as the significant makeover inside and out the F-150 received last year, the 2022 Ford Super Duty pickups get a number of important upgrades and some new trim and color combinations to keep it competitive in the hotly contested pickup game.
Since black is the new black, a body color is in, some new packages for 2022 allow customers to dial up their look. For starters, there’s a new Lariat Sport Appearance Package which comes with body color bumpers front and rear, exterior mirrors caps and the front grille. The package also includes a cleanly executed chrome exhaust tip and understated black running boards.
For fans of the Black Appearance Package, the 2022 Super Duty will allow buyers of t he XLT trim grade to select the popular look which includes 20-inch black painted wheels, body-color bumpers front and rear, black running boards and grille.
While much of the interior is carried over unlike the newest F-150 that got a complete makeover, a few tweaks make it more competitive none the less.
Front and center is a new and larger 12-inch SYNC4 infotainment touch screen which comes standard on Lariat trims and above. Like others systems offered it features lots of hard controls including large knobs and buttons you can use with gloves on.
The larger screen allows for split screen data displays as well as larger and more crisp graphics all around. Ford says the computer back end is more powerful to support new features like wireless and Apple CarPlay or Android Auto functionality. They tell us that its voice control operations are improved to work more conversationally too.
A smaller 8-inch touch screen is standard on XLT and less featured 4.2-inch screen remains the standard for radio and infotainment on the XL trim.
Carried over is the relatively new 7.3-liter naturally aspirated gas V8 with class leading 430 horsepower and 475 pound-feet of torque. Also still the sale leader is the 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel V8 with its 475 horsepower and 1,050 pound-feet of torque. Both engines come with a 10-speed automatic transmission only.
When it comes to capability, the only thing that will makes it work harder is if GM or Ram ups their ante. As such, the Ford Super Duty rolls into 2022 with a payload capacity of 7,850 pounds. Maximum towing is up to 37,000 pounds for gooseneck trailers, a max of 32,500 pounds for fifth-wheels, and up to 24,200 pounds for conventional trailers.
The new 2022 Ford Super Duty will be available this summer offering a couple new interior colors such as Baja in Lariat, Navy Pier and Light Slate interior for Limited trims, and the sharp new shade of Atlas Blue you’ve seen here in this video.
