For 2024 the smaller Bronco Sport member of the Ford Bronco family got a few tweaks and new packages including the colorful and retro Free Wheeling special edition, a Black Appearance Package and some revised color choices.

With order blanks now open for the 2024 Ford Bronco Sport, a lot of attention will surely be drawn to the two new appearance packages offered to what is otherwise a carry over model in terms of design and powertrain offerings.

The big one is the Free Wheeling special edition which is based almost directly on the concept vehicle we reported on from the SEMA Show a couple year ago and even used as inspiration for our own retro Free Wheeling makeover on our long term Ford Maverick last year.

The colorful sunset gradient stripes and red wheels are a direct draw from the Ford Free Wheeling edition trucks, vans and Broncos that were ubiquitous back in the 1970s. I’m old, I was there, and these things were everywhere.

The modern day Free Wheeling package has high-gloss reflective red, orange, yellow and silver graphics along the sides, at the back and on the hood. One departure from the concept vehicle is a more finished looking silver-painted grille with two-tone Bronco badging and unique fascia treatment.

The roof is pained in Shadow Black on all of the offered colors which includes just about the entire palette offered for 2024 – even Eruption Green. That’s an eye full. It’s all rounded out by the aforementioned 17-inch wheels with red pockets.

The interior also gets the styling makeover with handsome sunset-stripe seat fabrics and accent stitching. Additional theme appropriate trim treatments can be found throughout the cabin. The Free Wheeling Bronco Sport is its own trim grade starting at $33,730. As it is based on the Big Bend, the only powertrain available however is the 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbo engine.

The Big Bend trim grade will also gain a popular option in the new Black Appearance Package for 2024. It includes a Carbon Black grille with two-tone Bronco lettering, Matte Black 17-inch alloy wheels special Matte Black hood graphic and a Shadow Black painted roof. Other details include black trimmed badges and a black chrome Ford oval. Inside, unique trims and seating accouterments are included as well.

While not much else as changed in terms of specs, design, engines and chassis there are some new paint colors to choose from much like the changes made to the 2024 Ford Maverick. Gone are colors Area 51, Alto Blue and Cyber Orange.

They are replaced by Azure Gray which is essentially a replacement for Area 51 but metallic and therefore an option that costs extra now. There is also a shade of tan called Desert Sand which looks identical to the new color Terrain added to the Maverick for 2024.

Lastly if you like the retro Heritage trim which itself offers a very distinctive style, you can still get it even with the Robin Egg Blue. It’s based also on the Big Bend trim. The 2.0-liter EcoBoost Heritage Special Edition variant has been dropped for 2024.

As I stated, order banks are now open for the 2024 Ford Bronco Sport with production to begin late this fall. If you are interested in the Free Wheeling model you should probably get your order in sooner rather than later as it may sell out quickly.
