The 2024 Chevrolet Trax and Buick Envista use a well proven LIH 1.2-liter turbocharged and direct-injected three cylinder engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. In this vehicle it produces 137 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque.

The engine is comprised of an aluminum block and head which features dual overhead cams and four-valves per cylinder. It employs variable cam timing, an automatic idle start stop system and features an electric water pump. In the 2024 Chevrolet Trax we tested it’s rated by the EPA at 28 mpg city, 32 mpg highway and 30 mpg combined.

Following the airflow, the intake charge begins through a large snorkel at the front then travels into an air filter box at the front driver side of the engine compartment. From there it travels past a mass airflow sensor and through a tube to the turbocharger at the rear of the engine.

Once the intake charge is boosted it travels back up to the front of the vehicle through a tube and down to an air-to-air intercooler. After that a tube brings the air up to the front of the engine and into a composite plastic intake manifold.

The majority of its direct fuel injection system is hidden from view, but atop the engine you can see its three spark plug coil packs, easy to access. Once the combustion process is finished exhaust exits the rear of the engine through the turbocharger which features an electronically controlled wastegate.

Servicing the engine is very straight forward with easy access to most maintenance items. Windshield washer fluid and engine coolant reservoirs are both located at the passenger side of the engine compartment and easily seen. Adjacent to them is the main engine computer.

The engine oil dipstick and the oil filler cap can both be seen and accessed at the top of the engine whether the engine’s foam sound cover is on or off. The oil filter can only be accessed from underneath the vehicle.

Brake fluid can be checked and serviced at the driver side rear of the engine compartment, the reservoir sitting stop an electronically controlled brake unit. Ahead of that is the main 12-volt battery. The main fuse box is just to the right of the battery, easily accessed with a fuse removal tool located inside.

The air filter element is located inside the main air-box at the driver side front of the engine bay and does require tools and some level of effort to access and change as the air-intake snorkel must first be removed.

Always consult with your owners manual for information on the oil and other fluid requirements for this vehicle in addition to capacity levels.
