Steve Saleen, long time maker of high-performance car candy has recently unveiled his latest creation, the George Follmer Edition Mustang. We had a chance to get an up close look at it while attending a special open house event at the Saleen factory in Corona, CA.

The George Follmer Edition Mustang follows a number of special edition Mustangs Saleen has created honoring the name of vintage race car drivers including Parnelli Jones and Dan Gurney.

Unveiled at Monterey in August during the Pebble Beach Concours, the George Follmer Mustang is part of a new “Heritage Collection” of special editions which also includes a Mark Donohue Edition Camaro and a Swede Savage Edition Barracuda.

The 2014 George Follmer Edition Mustang is one up up to 250 that will be built, commemorating the storied 1969 Mustang BOSS 302 #16 driven by George back in the 1960’s and 1970’s. The number of 250 honors the Mission Bell 250 race at Riverside, CA in which Follmer raced.

The paint and graphics are a near perfect match in black, red and white. A BOSS 302 style reverse C stripe in white is laid over a red bottom half. The greenhouse silhouette gets black with a white roof panel just like the original back in the day.

A custom rear fascia and deck lid panel raise the license plate up, replacing the Mustang’s stock faux gas cap for a much cleaner and unique look.

Up front are some retro style hood pins and the headlight cross-bars first seen on the Saleen PJ cars a few years ago. The lower front fascia gets a clean lower lip and large 19” Panasport style wheels with GG logo caps fill the arches well.

The George Follmer Edition comes with a full selection of Saleen suspension, brakes and under hood modifications. The 5.0 liter V8 is massaged to an output of 470 naturally aspirated horsepower. While we haven’t driven one yet, we imagine the engine has quite a kick.

The interior gets custom leather in black and red with lots of Saleen highlights to capture the era as well as offer up a significant upgrade over the Mustang’s stock cabin. The custom stitched red and black leather seats have GF button logos in them, as does the custom leather shift knob.

A trademark Saleen gauge pod sits in the center of the dash and a GF logo also shows up in the center button of the leather wrapped steering wheel. Red leather door panel inserts and logo floor mats finish out the look.

Both Steve Saleen and George Follmer have autographed this first built car. The George Follmer Edition Mustang is now available for pre-order with first deliveries scheduled for this fall. MSRP is $74,999 according to Saleen.
