This week for Reality Check, GM announced they have solved their own internal personal transportation challenges not with cars, but bicycles.

Teaming with known bicycle sharing program Zagster, the automobile maker has implemented a fleet of bicycles at their Warren Tech Center campus to make travel at their facility easier for employees.

“GM is investing not only in the long-term health and productivity of its workforce, but sending a strong message to other employers around the country that bike sharing is a mainstream transportation option for employees,” said Timothy Ericson, co-founder and CEO of Zagster.

It’s eye opening to hear the people that design our cars talking about bicycle sharing being a better option in many instances. Times are changing.

“This is an awesome idea,” said John Waechter, designing engineer at the Tech Center. “I can’t wait to quickly get to meetings without walking to a car and finding parking. This is good for exercise, good for on-campus mobility and a nice way to actually learn more about non-auto transportation.”

Perhaps this little experiment might get GM to look at building bicycles or other small personal mobility devices that can put them ahead of the curve.
