The 2017 Kia Soul made its official debut at the LA Auto Show, getting a new high output turbocharged engine under its hood for the top of the line Exclaim.

Just hitting its stride, the second generation Kia Soul gets a healthy dose of horsepower and sporting intentions for the 2017 Exclaim in addition to comprehensive updates inside and out. Just when you thought there wasn’t enough soul huh?

The extra soul comes from a 1.6 liter turbocharged and direct-injected four that cranks up a healthy 201 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque. The engine comes exclusively with a quick shifting 7-speed dual clutch automatic transmission.

Even with the extra horsepower, the EPA still rates the turbocharged Kia Soul pretty highly at 26 mpg city, 31 highway and 28 mpg combined so you don’t pay a great deal amount more at the pump for the extra hamsters under the hood.

That extra power is handled by larger 18-inch aluminum wheels with P235/45 series tires. Braking power is upped with now 12-inch front rotors. Suspension however remains virtually identical to other Soul models with its gas struts and torsion beam rear axle.

There’s also a package of visuals to mark the sportier and quicker Soul !, notably the red accent trims here and there, a chrome grille surround and special badges. At the rear you’ll see a dual-tip chrome exhaust, a first for Soul.

Inside you’ll find a D-shaped sport steering wheel wrapped with leather, push-button start and a premium level of trims on the dash and door panels. Seats are wrapped in a combination of black leather and cloth with orange highlight stitching.

With a base price of $22,650, the 2017 Kia Soul ! can be added to with a panoramic roof for $1,000.

For another $3,000 you can get the Technology Package that adds a whole vast list of of equipment from a 315-watt Harman Kardon audio system with navigation to heated seats front and rear, and a full HID projector beam headlights with an LED exterior lighting array.

All Kia Souls from base up get revised wheel designs, updated audio and infotainment systems and drive mode selector. Exterior changes for 2017 also include revised front and rear fascias and new headlight and fog light designs.
