You know it had to happen sooner or later, and at the Detroit Auto Show a truly all-new 2018 Toyota Camry was unveiled with not only new styling inside and out, but all-new engines.

When you have the best selling car in America, you don’t change it up too much. You want to stay at the front, but you don’t take unnecessary risks. That’s a strategy that Toyota has been keen to follow with the all-new 2018 Camry.

Immediately recognizable as a Camry, the new car rides on the all-new Toyota New Global Architecture known as TNGA. With it comes fractional changes in size, namely a 2-inch longer wheelbase, but overall length and width are not that different.

Styling is fresh from the ground up starting with a new two-piece grill design at the front of a hood line that’s now 1.6-inches lower. The Hybrid model will get its own unique design treatment as well as will the sporty SE model.

From the side you might sense a lower fastback roof line that contributes to a longer and sleeker look. This is augmented by a more pronounced kick up at the rear door window line and with the available black roof treatment can add an entirely new look to the Camry.

At the rear is a bolder and more sculpted presentation. The rear bumper has strake lines that extend from the tail lights to break up the traditional bumper corner we’ve known, and the XSE gets a sexy set of quad tail pipes.

Speaking of tail pipes, three new powertrains come to the 2018 Camry starting with an updated 3.5 liter V6 which will now have D4S fuel injection for better power and efficiency. It will be joined by a new base 2.5 liter four-cylinder that will come exclusively with an all-new 8-speed automatic transmission.

Additionally the popular Camry Hybrid will come with a significantly redesigned 2.5 liter engine and hybrid drive system that promises not only better fuel economy but much more fun to drive characteristics. In fact you will be able to get an SE Hybrid with paddle shifters.

Horsepower specifications and EPA mileage estimates weren’t given at today’s reveal but are expected to be improved across the board for all three powertrains.

Handling too should be more involving with the new TNGA platform. Highlights include an all-new multi-link rear suspension to go along with the 2018 Camry’s lower center of gravity and significantly tighter body structure. Add in additional sound deadening strategies and this should be one of the best riding Camrys yet.

And riding you’ll do in a completely redesigned interior that focuses more on the driver than ever before with a more cockpit oriented place for the driver. This along with improved materials across the board, new color and trim options and a host of technologies should keep Camry at the top of sales charts without too much sweat.

We’ll have a much more detailed review soon when we get our first chance behind the wheel of the 2018 Camry, which is due in your local dealer showrooms late this summer.
