The 2022 Hyundai Tucson features a standard 2.5-liter direct and port fuel-injected four cylinder engine. The latest generation of this engine, it features an aluminum block and head and continuously variable valve timing.
Mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission and AWD in the case of our test vehicle, it makes 187 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque. Featuring an idle start-stop system, it is rated by the EPA at 24 mpg city, 29 mpg highway and 26 mpg combined.
Following the airflow, the intake charge starts behind the grille and enters a large filter box at the driver side just behind the radiator. From there it travels downward to a single bore throttle body at the bottom of the plastic composite variable intake manifold.
From there it travels into the head and into the head and combustion chambers.
With the engine cover removed from the top of the head you can see more. The coil packs for the four spark plugs are partially visible with a sound and thermal insulating pad covering them a bit. The the fuel system for the port fuel-injection can be seen at the front with its main rail. Most of the direct fuel injection system is hidden below the valve cover except for the pressure regulator at the driver side end.
The exhaust exits at the rear of the engine into a catalytic converter mounted high up for better thermal efficiency and to make it less easy for thieves to get at.
Doing your own service and maintenance is relatively straight forward with plenty of room to work. The coolant reservoir is located up at the passenger side firewall and just ahead of it is the windshield washer fluid.
Checking and filling the oil is done nearby at the passenger side top of the engine. The oil filter is only reachable from underneath the vehicle.
The brake fluid reservoir is at its expected location at the driver side firewall where it sits atop and increasingly rare conventional brake master cylinder and power booster system. To its right is the 12-volt battery.
To the right of the battery near the shock tower is the main fuse box. You can remove the cover easily with a few tabs. Inside you will find a fuse removal tool provided. Nice.
The air filter is easily accessed at the driver side front of the engine compartment where it can be easily changed without tools.
