The all-new 2018 Subaru Crosstrek will make its official debut at the New York International Auto Show next week, but they’ve given us a sneak peek ahead of the show.

The 2018 Subaru Crosstrek is the second car built on the new Subaru Global Platform that offers a 70% stiffer stronger chassis structure, better handling and more interior space in addition to new styling front to rear.

The design language while evolutionary from the last generation Crosstrek is what Subaru calls “Dynamic x Solid.” It’s bolder and has a few different details here and there but looks much like the black body clad Crosstrek we’ve known since it was first introduced.

Now available however will be steering responsive headlights, that can light up the curves ahead and automatic high-beams. Familiar will be the Subaru hexagonal grille and standard will be alloy wheels just as before.

Wheelbase is up by 1.2-inches to almost 105 and the length is up just a bit over a half inch, which helps give the interior more space while keeping its overall footprint pretty close to before. The interior itself gains the all-new design we see in the 2017 Impreza with many of the new technologies like Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

Inside, new and bolder color combinations will be available on upper trim grades to really spice it up to match the exterior colors available. Additional space will be found for rear seat passengers as well as in the cargo area.

Powering the 2018 Subaru Crosstrek is a revised 2.0-liter 4-cylinder “Boxer” engine now with direct fuel injection which bumps output slightly to 152 horsepower. As before the Crosstrek will be available with a six-speed manual in base trim and a CVT across the lineup.

When you step up to the limited, the CVT features a 7-speed manual mode function that can be tapped with steering wheel paddle shifters, giving you simulated shift points.

Active Torque Vectoring similar to that found on the WRX and WRX STI, is now standard on all trim grades to help handling on and off road. And for off-road there is an available X-Mode that gives you ability to increase traction in extreme situations.

The new Crosstrek is expected of course to retain its Top Safety Pick status with the IIHS going into the model year with a new structure designed to perform some 40% better in crash testing scenarios. Additionally, it will continue to offer Subaru’s renowned Eyesight crash avoidance systems which have made them Japan’s “safety brand.”

The new 2018 Subaru Crosstrek will be available in base, Premium, and Limited trim levels when it arrives at Subaru retailers this summer. Pricing will be announced closer to that time.
