For 2019 the Ford Edge Sport now becomes the Ford Edge ST, now with more power, bigger wheels and brakes, and new styling just to say, “Hey I’m hotter now”.
Making its public debut at the Detroit Auto Show, the redesigned 2019 Ford Edge high-performance model becomes the first Ford SUV to wear the “ST” badge nomenclature previously attributed to cars that the Ford Performance team has massaged up.
Featuring the same 2.7-liter twin-turbocharged V6 available before in the Sport, the 2019 Edge ST gets 20 more horsepower, now with 335. Torque remains the same at 380 pound-feet but now goes to all-four wheels through a new close ratio 8-speed automatic transmission.
A Ford Performance tuned suspension does the ground work along with standard 20-inch wheels as on the Sport before. Now however there’s larger 21-inch wheels available as shown here with summer performance rubber. A performance package is also available with larger sport brakes with those sexy red calipers.
The driver Sport Mode amps up the feel of the Edge ST with sharper throttle response and shifting behavior from its 8-speed automatic. It will hold your gears during aggressive driving in curves and even has brisk engine braking when held. The Sport Mode also amps up the exhaust note.
You can manually shift the new 8-speed with steering wheel mounted paddle shifters, and you’ll need to because there is no more console lever. It has gone away now replaced by the rotary shift dial that is infecting all of the Fords lately.
The interior gets a few tweaks including a redesigned console around the aforementioned rotary shift dial as well as highly bolstered sport seats with ST logos throughout. Sporty trims and scuff plates round out the theme.
Outside, the 2019 Ford Edge already gets a redesigned grille, front and rear fascias. On the ST you get a blackout treatment with a mesh grille marked with the red ST logo and book ended by LED headlamps. The lower fascia also has additional gills and cheeks for more sportiness.
At the rear is a unique fascia, here with more aggressive design elements including some massive exhaust outlets for that extra sound Sport Mode will offer up.
In addition to the performance upticks, the 2019 Ford Edge refresh brings with it a number of new things including a new standard Wi-Fi hotspot with internet access for up to 10 devices. A monthly fee of course is involved.
Top end audio now comes by way of a 12-speaker B&O PLAY system by HARMAN, a wireless charging pad is now available as well as a laundry list of semi-autonomous safety and driving assistance features for those that want it.
Pricing and final specifications for the 2019 Ford Edge ST will come along a little closer to its on sale date this summer.
