Due to arrive as a 2024 model, Chevrolet this week revealed their all-electric 2024 Blazer EV, their entry into the newly minted mid-size SUV class to compete against rivals like the Ford Mach-E, Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6.
Looking unmistakably like a Blazer from across the parking lot, the new all-electric SUV has an athletic stance and sexy shaping that speaks performance and the brand’s styling DNA well. Being quite honest, I think this is one of the best looking Chevrolet designs in a while.
Starting at $44,995, the Blazer EV will be available in all of the familiar trims 1LT, 2LT, RS and at the top will be the first ever electric SS performance model. Chevrolet is even cooking up a pursuit-rated Police Pursuit Vehicle (PPV) version as well.
Wheels sizes range from 19-inches up to 22-inches as shown on the SS model here. RS and SS trims will feature animated LED lighting bar and bowtie sequence. The SS getting its own unique front fascia and front-end design.
Built on GM’s new scaleable Ultium chassis architecture, the Blazer EV will be available in FWD, RWD and AWD configurations with a number of battery range options to fit a wide variety of price and performance benchmarks.
Stepping all the way up to the AWD SS performance model you get 557 horsepower and up to 648 lb-ft of torque. Like the Ludicrous mode of Tesla, the SS has a WOW (Wide Open Watts) mode that allows 0-60 romps of less than 4 seconds. All that and it has a 290 mile range.
The 1LT is FWD only, the 2LT FWD or AWD, the RS can be had with FWD, RWD or AWD. The SS of course, standard with performance AWD. The lesser powered two-wheel drive models with the largest battery can reach up to 320 miles in range. Horsepower figures for the lower trims in FWD, AWD and RWD have not yet been released but similar to the Cadillac Lyric should be in the 300-340 range.
There’s a powered-opening charge port door at the front driver side. Like most EVs it can charge on household current slow and a 240V Level 2 charger faster. RS and SS have standard DC fast-charging capability of up to 190 kW which can add approximately 78 miles of range in 10 minutes.
To extend range you can opt to use the One-Pedal Driving mode which with aggressive regenerative braking allows you to slow the vehicle and come to a complete stop, using only the power pedal. It’s a lot like a carnival bumper car at first but pretty cool when you get used to it.
Inside is a modern yet retro inspired interior that features a huge 17.7-inch-diagonal customizable touchscreen infotainment system and human interface. It’s joined by an also customizable 11-inch-digital instrument cluster. With a large flat battery pack under the floor, the seating position is high and there’s plenty or room to spread your legs, not to mention cargo space throughout.
What I really like most about this interior is the Chevrolet heritage styling elements like the round metal vents and the theme and feel that really bring a lot of the Camaro and Corvette into the mix, more fun and performance, less soccer-mom SUV.
